this past weekend (March 3-6) was the annual True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri. this film festival is a big deal on the realm of documentaries. somehow i didn't realize how exciting this festival is last year as a freshman at the University of Missouri, but this year i changed that and went to two films (just two, but i'm already excited to broaden my horizons next year). i went to a film at Missouri Theatre friday night, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, which was really interesting. saying that it was interesting is, yes, very vague but i don't quite know how else to describe it - at the beginning of the film i was very leery but as time went by you somehow got more into the complicated story.
my brother acquired a pass to the festival through kindness - sometimes initiating conversation, even if it's a stranger, can really change your life! so my brother attended many films over the course of the weekend and got to indulge in opportunities and accentuation of the Downtown Columbia "the District" community. Every shop, restaurant, and business in between excels in participating and promoting the True/False festival weekend. i love that. on sunday morning my brother and i went to breakfast (i love breakfast, as in previous posts). my family's absolute favorite breakfast spot on Columbia is Cafe Berlin. the buzz of the festival, even on the last day, was prominent and packed Cafe Berlin which might have made breakfast even more enjoyable. literally. i tried a new dish, the Carey Burrito, and it was hands-down the best thing i have had to date at Cafe Berlin - and i've been going there since before i ever started college! later sunday both my brother and i ended our festival weekend by attending the movie, Cameraperson. out of the two films i saw Cameraperson was my favorite. i highly recommend checking the film out if possible. it was a memoir-like documentary of the director, piecing her previous unused film clips together to create a haunting story, unique to every viewer. i have to say film festivals might be my newest obsession... the community of Columbia, Missouri and indie movies go hand in hand. i can't wait to experience more film festivals! thankfully CoMo has two film festivals each year - one in the spring and one in the fall! britney
